The Town of Sidney is located 26 kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia’s capital city, and is one of 13 municipalities in the Capital Regional District (CRD). Sidney is situated on the north east end of the Saanich Peninsula. The Town’s north, south and west boundaries are shared with the District of North Saanich. To the east, Sidney overlooks Haro Strait, the Southern Gulf Islands, and the Northern San Juan Islands.

Endowed with a temperate climate, rich ecology, stunning landscapes, flat terrain, and a proud history, Sidney has evolved into a destination for visitors, residents and businesses alike, providing year round opportunities for outdoor activities in a beautiful ocean side setting.

Sidney’s population in 2016 was 11,672 people within a geographic area of only 5.04 square kilometres. This explains Sidney’s high population density of 2,315 people per square kilometre.

Regionally, the Town of Sidney is known as a transportation hub. The only Canadian Port of Call for the Washington State Ferry system connects Sidney to Anacortes, a service enjoyed by both residents and visitors. Minutes away from Sidney is the Victoria International Airport and the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal which connect southern Vancouver Island to the BC Mainland and the rest of the world. Proximity to Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle enhance the attraction of Sidney as a centre for technological innovation, business development and economic investment.

Sidney’s business park, located on the north-west side of Highway 17, hosts a variety of high-tech, aviation, and manufacturing companies, while the scenic downtown provides a vibrant retail, restaurant and service centre.

These past two years have seen a significant increase in development within the Town of Sidney. At the close of 2016, a total of 360 building permits were issued, resulting in 136 new residential units.

The Town of Sidney is committed to ensuring that our local economy remains prosperous. In 2016, Sidney Council established an Economic Development Commission to enhance the economic environment in Sidney through initiatives that will facilitate business development and attraction, create synergies among partners, and enable our community to grow and thrive.
