The Building

Depicted below are the 100% schematic design and elevation drawings for the proposed Community Safety Building located on the lands south of the Mary Winspear Center. The design provides for adequate apron space for fire and emergency training which is currently not possible at the Third Street fire hall location. The building is designed and will be constructed to “Post Disaster” standards ensuring Sidney’s fire and emergency medical services are able to respond when needed most, which is currently not the case with emergency services located on Third street. Logically, the functionality of the building has dictated its form, energy efficiency, and low annual maintenance costs were also key factors influencing the design process. Unlike the existing fire hall, this building is designed with a service life of 75 years, with large apparatus bays and future expansion on the third floor integrated into the design.  This building will be able to grow with the Town as required.

The exterior of the building is in keeping with surrounding built form while still retaining key design elements of a traditional Community Safety Building. Input into the design of the new Community Safety Building has included BCAS, a subcommittee of volunteer firefighters, and senior town staff, all working with our architect. Many local and distant Community Safety Buildings considered to represent best practices in design, with an emphasis on safety, functionality, and versatility, were site visited and reviewed in detail. Our design is best considered an amalgam of these best practices tailored to the specific requirements of the Town of Sidney.

100% schematic design plans are largely representative of what the proposed Community Safety Building will look like, however minor changes to the building should be expected as subtle requirements, changes and efficiencies are identified.
