Five Keys to Emergency Preparedness

By following these five simple steps, individuals can increase their preparedness to all types of hazards.

1. Know Your Risks: Inform yourself, your family and friends about what hazards are most likely to occur in Sidney, especially at your home, school, or workplace. Having the right information can prevent wasted energy, reduce stress, and help you to be prepared properly.

2. Prepare for Seven Days: Although we are often told to prepare to be self sufficient for 72 hours (3 days), we are learning from disasters in New Zealand and Japan that a major disaster would probably take more time to distribute resources. This is especially true because we are on Vancouver Island and distant from help that may arrive from the Mainland.

3. Make a Plan: Take an afternoon or an evening and make a plan for your family and/or business. Make an effort to practice this plan on a regular basis.

4. Build a Kit: Either buy a pre-packaged emergency kit, or make your own from scratch, using common household items. It is simple to do and will make a big difference in an emergency situation.

5. Get Involved: Talk with your neighbours, family, and friends about emergencies. Take training and volunteer for local emergency agencies.

These five steps are logical in sequence, starting with gaining knowledge, applying this knowledge within the context of your particular situation, then taking action to prepare yourself and your family, and finally taking action to prepare your community.
