One of the best ways to prepare for seven days on your own is to assemble an emergency kit. An emergency kit should be easy to locate and to take with you in the event of an emergency. It should contain food, water, and supplies for seven days.
Impossible for your large family to have a kit with all necessary goods that is still moveable? How about a suitcase with wheels? Each family member could have their own backpack, perhaps one that could also be used for hiking Or it may be wise to have additional supplies stored securely in a shed or car.
A printable checklist of things that go into an emergency kit can be found at: www.getprepared.gc.ca/knw/kt/kt-eng.aspx
In addition, the Canadian Red Cross has a step-by-step guide called ‘20 weeks to personal preparedness’ at: www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=4414&tid=080
There are many retail outlets in the Greater Victoria Area that specialize in emergency kits. You can find them in the Yellow Pages or using the Internet.
