Supplies for your family may differ depending on your needs. However, there are some common items that should be included in every kit:
· A flashlight and radio, either battery powered or the wind-up variety, and spare batteries. A flashlight will help you at night when the power is off and a radio is important to get the latest safety information from local authorities.
· Basic first aid supplies, such as latex gloves, a variety of bandages, compressions pads, ties, wraps, adjustable splints, scissors and disinfectant. Knowing how to use them also helps, so consider taking a first aid course.
· Sturdy shoes and work gloves can prevent injuries to people that are helping with search and rescue efforts in areas that may be littered with broken glass and other sharp objects.
· Cooking and eating gear, such as can openers, camping stoves, and a few pots, dishes, and utensils will save you from eating straight out of the can with your fingers.
· A change of warm clothes is essential for our Canadian climate, and toiletries help people keep normal hygiene routines.
Many other supply items can be added to an emergency kit, including water-proof matches and other survival items.
