Prolonged Power Outage

A large number of events can cause power outages, including heavy winds, ice storms, snow storms, falling trees or other debris, vehicle impacts, earthquakes and technical failures of power transmission equipment.

Although it might not seem very dangerous at first, prolonged outages during winter, when outside temperatures are very low, can threaten your life.

Electricity is considered an essential service to maintain heat and cooking facilities and to support other critical utilities. Just ask the Ontario residents who survived the Blackout of 1998, which was blamed for 30 deaths.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

· Call BC Hydro at 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766).

· Have a battery operated light to avoid using candles.

· Never go near a fallen power line.

· If you have a generator, know how to use it safely.

· Have a plan to generate heat safely, such as a well-ventilated kerosene heater or wood stove.
