Wind storms can uproot trees that can damage housing, spread debris across roads, and bring down power and communication lines. Snow storms can likewise result in serious impacts to roadways, power transmission facilities, and communication networks. In addition, the weight of heavy ice or snow can cause structures to collapse.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
· Trim dead branches and cut down dead trees to reduce the danger of them falling on your house during a storm.
· If you live on the coast or in a low-lying area near the foreshore, take steps to protect your property from sea water. The storm may cause ocean waters to surge higher, and heavy winds may create large waves.
During a wind storm:
· Never go out in a boat during a storm. If you are on the water and you see bad weather approaching, head for shore immediately. Always check the marine forecast before going boating, and listen to weather reports during your cruise.
· Do not go down to the water to watch the storm. Most people who are killed during wind storms are caught in large waves, storm surges, or flood waters.
· Listen for reports from authorities on your portable radio.
· You can use a cellular telephone during a severe thunderstorm, but it may not be safe to use a land-line telephone.
During a snow storm:
· Limit yourself to only essential travel because roadways and walkways may be dangerous.
