The Sidney RCMP is proud to say that the detachment has met and surpassed expectations through a very busy 2003. Several major incidents taxed resources but the strength of teamwork within the membership in conjunction with the community have contributed to the success.

The balancing act of sustaining services within our resources while satisfying our communities’ expectation for safety has been challenging. The professionalism and dedication of our members in partnership with the community has proven time and again that Sidney is one of the most desirable and safe communities in which to live.

  Town of Sidney Detachment

On going training and upgrading of skills ensure that the members are keeping up with the latest policy and case law in the pursuit of excellence as police officers. Our members have the opportunity for a unique and diverse policing experience: along with the daily policing of the municipality, qualified members also police the waters of the peninsula including 52 islands; all work with and police four First Nations reservations; patrol and investigate incidents at the Victoria International Airport and ensure the safety of users of the Trans-Canada Highway falling within our detachment area.

There are several volunteers that give countless hours to assist with the community policing initiatives. Speed Watch members set up and monitor traffic throughout the detachment area giving a friendly reminder to drive within the posted speed limit.

Members of the Auxiliary Constable program conduct foot patrols and bike patrols and home security checks. They are also involved in Coast Watch and Marine Watch programs while assisting the regular members when required. Other volunteer programs include Neighborhood Watch and Block Watch. Also, the civilian staff at the detachment need mentioning as their dedicated work ensures police members are given the best opportunity  to conduct their investigations without distraction.

Detachment members are active in the community outside of their work. Coaching sport teams and volunteering at other functions to give back to the supportive municipalities. The members maintain a high standard for personal fitness and participation in programs such as Tour de Rock - raising awareness and promoting the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.

Though 2003 was a challenge that was met and overcome we must again refocus to the challenges that will no doubt emerge in 2004. We continue to address the concerns of the community and build the bridges with youth, and the community at large. The members of the Sidney detachment are proud to serve the people of our community and are motivated to build on the successes of the past year through 2004.
