| ASSESSMENT |
Top |
|
BC Assessment Authority is an independent body that provides market value information on the properties to be taxed within the Town of Sidney jurisdiction. Notices of assessed values are mailed to each property owner at the end of December. These values may be appealed to the Property Assessment Review Panel (through BC Assessment) no later than January 31st.
The assessment values provided by BC Assessment are used to determine the tax rates required to generate the taxation revenue determined by Council in the Financial Plan. It is important to note that a large general increase in assessed value will not necessarily result in a large tax increase as the tax rates are based on the overall assessed values for the Town and on the revenue required each year. For further information regarding property assessments, please refer to the BC Assessment website. |

The payment date to avoid a 5% late payment penalty is the first business day after July 1st. A second 5% late payment penalty is assessed in September on outstanding balances as of the first business day of the month. These penalties also apply to unclaimed Home Owner Grants. It is not necessary to make a payment in order to claim the grant. |

INTEREST ON PREPAID TAX INSTALLMENTS |
|
Regardless of the payment method, interest is credited to your account in the same way. Beginning in August each year, the Town will begin paying monthly interest on your pre-payment account balance. The rate used is 2.5% below prime. This interest is considered a tax discount by the Canada Revenue Agency and is tax-free to you. |
