Friday, November 14, representatives from the Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) and the Town of Sidney will be conducting a ribbon cutting at the new crosswalk on Weiler Avenue and Canora Road to officially connect two of the area’s “Heartsmart” trails. The new Heartsmart connection runs 1.2 km along Weiler Avenue, from the VAA Flight Path to the Lochside waterfront walkway.
Spearheading the initiative is Sidney Town Councillor, Kenny Podmore. “I began the Heartsmart project back in 2007 when I was President of the Sidney Rotary Club to raise awareness of heart health and promote overall health and wellness. With the support of the Town of Sidney, Heartsmart maps and markers were erected along the 2.5 km waterfront walkway.” states Podmore.
Earlier this summer, the Victoria Airport Authority came on board and installed Heartsmart signage along their Flight Path. This was also done at the encouragement of Podmore.
James Bogusz, Vice-President Operations & Development stated, “Kenny’s passion for the Heartsmart walk concept resonated so well with the community that we were pleased to have added that theme as part of the overall sign package on the Flight Path. This new crosswalk at Weiler Ave creates another fantastic connection between Sidney and the airport that can be enjoyed by the community.”
The VAA’s multi-use, 9.3 km Flight Path which was completed in October 2013, surrounds the airport lands and has become a popular walking, running and biking trail for both residents and tourists. The trail is well marked with distance markers, historical information, trail etiquette and geographical points of interest. As well, the VAA has launched an interactive map of the Flight Path on their website at www.victoriaairport.com.
The public and media are invited to attend the ribbon cutting at the intersection of Weiler Avenue and Canora Road, on Friday, November 14th at 2:30 pm as VAA President and CEO, Geoff Dickson and Councillor Kenny Podmore officially link the two trails, creating a 13 km Heartsmart walk through Sidney and around the airport lands.
