Sidney’s New Rainbow Crosswalk Opens

rainbow crosswalkSidney, B.C.; Thursday, October 4th, at 9:30 am, Mayor Steve Price and members of Sidney Council will open the new rainbow crosswalk at the foot of Beacon Avenue by Beacon Wharf. The first official crossing will include residents, Christy and Maggie Smith who spearheaded the project.

Two-year-old Maggie’s rainbow drawing prompted a conversation between her and her mother Christy about inclusivity. This, in turn, inspired the idea to bring Maggie’s drawing into the Town Hall and present it to Mayor Price along with their request that the Town of Sidney incorporates a rainbow crosswalk somewhere into the community.

Council approved the crosswalk at their September 4th meeting and Sidney Public Works staff undertook the newly painted addition as weather has permitted.

In recent years, rainbow crosswalks have become a way for towns and cities across the country to demonstrate acceptance and solidarity with the LGBTQ community and other individuals that have been targeted with discrimination. The new rainbow crosswalk in Sidney is located at the crossing at Beacon Wharf between Beacon Park and the waterfront walkway.

The public is encouraged to attend the First Crossing of Sidney’s new rainbow crosswalk on Thursday, October 4th to show their support.
