Sidney to Celebrate Canada 150

Plans are well underway for the Town of Sidney to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017. The Town, in cooperation with the Sidney Events Advisory Group (SEAG) have developed a month-long celebration for the big year that will also integrate celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of Sidney officially becoming a Town.

Town Council heard from Kenny Podmore, who is the Anniversary Events Coordinator, at the recent Committee of the Whole Meeting. Mr. Podmore provided a brief overview of the proposed plans which encompass the guidelines set by the Federal Canada 150 Program of securing a legacy for the future, providing opportunities for the community to participate and celebrate together and recognizing and promoting exceptional Canadian people.

Tentative plans are underway for the following events and initiatives: a street party, children’s carnival, street banner program, Dinner en Rouge (a community dinner fashioned after the popular Dinner en Blanc) and a bigger, brighter Sidney Days / Canada Day Celebration.

The Town’s 50th Anniversary will be recognized on January 1st, the official day of re-incorporation as the “Town of Sidney”, with an Afternoon Tea for Sidney residents at the Mary Winspear Centre. The Tea will include children’s activities as well as other official events.

Throughout the celebrations, there are opportunities for community organizations to host an event or make a dedication. All community groups, businesses, schools and organizations are invited and encouraged to participate so that Sidney has a community-wide celebration honouring our country’s 150 and our Town’s 50th.

If your organization has an initiative you would like included in Sidney’s 150 / 50 Celebrations, please contact Kenny Podmore at 250-655-4631 or anniversary2017@sidney.ca.
