Final cost-sharing agreement gets Sidney approval for Beacon Avenue West Roundabout

Council approved its portion of costs in a final cost-sharing agreement between Victoria Airport Authority and the District of North Saanich for a new roundabout at Galaran Road and Beacon Avenue West, which includes the realignment of Stirling Way. The previously adjusted budget of $6.4 million for the project is based on a Class A estimate. This type of estimate provides the highest degree of certainty prior to a project going to tender.

The Town of Sidney has agreed to contribute up to $2.65 million to the project, representing approximately 41.4% of the total estimated cost. Under the cost-sharing agreement, the Victoria Airport Authority will also contribute up to 41.4% of project costs, with the District of North Saanich contributing $1.1 million, representing $17.2% of the project budget.

On behalf of project partners, the Town has applied for a $5 million federal grant (Strategic Priorities Fund of the Canada Community-Building Fund). If successful, the grant would offset the majority of project costs. The outcome of this grant will be known in early 2023.

The new roundabout will increase public safety, reduce congestion, and support economic development in the area. The project is being managed by the Victoria Airport Authority.
