Access Awareness Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in June and originally arose in conjunction with the Rick Hansen "Man in Motion Tour" to promote changes in facilities and infrastructure that had barriers to those with mobility issues. Sidewalk curbs, handicapped accessible washrooms, automatic door openers and a lot more have changed for the better. The Town of Sidney now incorporates accessibility planning when changing sidewalks or enhancing streetscapes. And for a number of years, the Town has offered a free wireless computer accessibility network along the Beacon Avenue corridor.
Each year, the Jeannette Hughes Accessibility Award is given to an individual, business or organization whose work has improved the lives of people living with a disability.
