Nominations

Nomination documents are available on our Forms, Notices, & Guides page for persons interested in running as a candidate for the offices of:

  • Mayor (1 elected)
  • Councillor (6 elected)
  • School Trustee (1 elected)
 

The Nomination Period begins at 9:00 am on Tuesday, September 4 and closes at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 14, 2018. During this period, nomination forms must be filed with the Chief Election Officer at Town Hall (2440 Sidney Avenue).

Qualifications to Run for Office: 

  • age 18 or older;
  • a Canadian Citizen;
  • a resident of BC for at least 6 months; and
  • not be disqualified by any statute or law from being nominated, elected or holding office.

                                    Who May Run for Office

Prospective candidates must be nominated by at least two eligible electors from the Town of Sidney.  Further information regarding the election of School Trustee (School District No. 63) is available from the Ministry of Education.

Candidates Forum  (for offices of Mayor and Councillor)

The Town, District of North Saanich and the District of Central Saanich are sponsoring a new candidates forum which will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 6:00 pm, at Mary Winspear Centre. The forum will be provided by Mr. Rob Roycroft and will cover topics such as time commitments, compensation, conflict of interest, impact on personal life, decision making, elected officials roles and responsibilities, and a discussion of the complexity of municipal issues. 

School Trustee Candidates Forum  (for School Board Trustee)

Saanich School District No. 63 will host an information meeting to help prospective candidates learn more about public education, School District 63 (Saanich) and the work of a Board of Education.  The evening session will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at the School Board Office (2125 Keating Cross Road, Saanichton).  For more information, please call the office of the Superintendent of Schools/Secretary Treasurer at 250-652-7332.  

ALL Candidates Meeting  (for offices of Mayor and Councillor)

The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an All Candidates Meeting on Tuesday, September 18, at 7:00 pm, at the Mary Winspear Centre.   For more information, please call the Chamber at 250-656-7111 or email at info@peninsulachamber.ca.

ALL Candidates Meeting  (for offices of Mayor and Councillor)

The Sidney Community Association will be hosting an All Candidates Meeting on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at 7:00 pm, at the Mary Winspear Centre.   For more information, please call the Association at 250-634-4715 or email at sidneycommunityassociation@gmail.com.  

Candidate Resources 

Individuals considering running in local elections now have access to resources (educational videos, brochures, etc.) that provide information about the general expectations and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials.  These new resources will help people to make informed decisions about running for government office.
