Open Houses planned for Sidney Town Hall replacement project
Sidney BC
The Town of Sidney is inviting residents to attend upcoming open houses to learn more about early planning for a future Town Hall replacement and provide input on key considerations.
Built in 1964, the current Town Hall is deteriorating and has become increasingly costly to maintain. It no longer meets accessibility and space needs. In 2025, the Town commissioned an independent building condition assessment to determine whether Town Hall could continue functioning for another 40 years. The assessment found extensive renovations would be required, including:
- Replacing major mechanical and electrical systems;
- Installing new building footings;
- Adding an elevator to meet accessibility requirements;
- Undertaking seismic upgrades to meet current Building Code standards; and
- Upgrading the building exterior.
Given the scale of work required, the consultant concluded that the cost of renovating Town Hall could be comparable to building new, without the benefits of a modern layout or better use of the site.
As a result, the Town is now exploring options for a future Town Hall replacement.
“Planning the future of Sidney’s civic sites, including Town Hall, has long been a priority in the Town’s Strategic Plan. This important, long-term project will include many opportunities for public input, and we want to start the conversation early so initial concepts reflect community values and priorities, said Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith. “Keeping costs and tax impacts as low as possible will involve a thoughtful approach, and ongoing community input can help guide decisions related to location, design, financing, and potential community uses.”
Community members are invited to fill out an online survey at Sidney.ca by April 30, and attend one of the upcoming Open Houses.
