Council considers feedback from initial community engagement on future Town Hall

Council has received a summary of community feedback gathered between February 19 and April 30 to help inform planning for a future Town Hall.

Built in 1964, the current Town Hall is aging, costly to maintain, and includes areas that are not accessible to people with mobility challenges. A 2025 independent assessment found that extending the building’s lifespan would require significant upgrades at a cost comparable to rebuilding, while still leaving some deficiencies unaddressed.

As a result, Council directed staff to conduct early public engagement to share information and ensure any future concept plans for Town Hall reflect community priorities. Engagement activities included two open houses and an online survey, which received 522 responses.

Key takeaways from the feedback include:

  • Strong support for minimizing costs and limiting borrowing.
  • Openness to staying in the current location or exploring alternative locations within the downtown core.
  • Some openness to partnering on a mixed-use building.
  • Fairly divided views on building height limits.
  • Low interest in leasing rather than owning a future facility.

The replacement of Town Hall is a significant project for the community and no decisions have been made at this time. Initial public input will help Council identify which options warrant further exploration before draft concepts for a future Town Hall are developed and shared with the community for consideration. Planning for the project is expected to continue into 2027 and 2028, with ongoing opportunities for community engagement.
