In 2024, Sidney joined a Provincial pilot project for electric kick scooters, commonly called e-scooters. The pilot project runs until April 5, 2028.
By participating in the pilot, electrick kick scooters are permitted in Sidney, and the Town can provide feedback on an annual basis to the Province to help inform future decisions about whether these types of scooters should be permanently permitted under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Electric kick scooter rules and safety:
Riders must:
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Wear an approved helmet
- Obey all traffic signs and signals
- Use lights when riding at night
- Travel at 25 km/h or less
Riders must not:
- Carry passengers
- Ride while impaired or distracted
- Use high-powered scooters that exceed Provincial limits
- Ride a scooter equipped with a seat
Electric kick scooters are permitted wherever bicycles are allowed, specifically:
- On roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less (using a bike lane where available)
- In designated bike lanes on roads with speed limits over 50 km/h
Electric kick scooters are not permitted:
- On sidewalks
- In crosswalks
- Where signs prohibit cycling or scooter use
