Changing Places facility now open in Town of Sidney’s Seaport Washroom
Sidney BC
The Changing Places facility in the Town of Sidney’s new washroom building along the downtown waterfront is now open, offering a significantly higher level of service than standard accessible washrooms.
The new washroom building in Seaport Park is located along the Waterfront Walkway near Beacon Park, a hub of community events throughout the summer and a popular walking route year-round. Since the washrooms are conveniently located near the downtown waterfront, care was taken during the design of the building to complement the surrounding architecture.
The Changing Places Facility supports people with complex disabilities and their caregivers, including a height-adjustable adult change table, electric hoist, and extra space for caregivers. This is the first facility of its kind in Sidney. The washroom also features four additional toilets, with two accessible stalls.
This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund and the Province of BC’s Growing Communities Fund.
Quotes:
It’s essential to have safe and accessible washrooms, especially for people with disabilities. I’m happy to see the Town of Sidney using the Growing Community Fund to improve accessibility for its residents. This is another way how the Province is supporting local governments to improve the lives of British Columbians.
– Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
Making Sidney more accessible is an ongoing priority for the Town of Sidney. The way we design municipal infrastructure is a key opportunity to facilitate greater inclusion in the community. We want to ensure all community members and visitors can enjoy our beautiful downtown with comfort and dignity.
– Cliff McNeil-Smith, Mayor of Sidney
