Art on the streets
Since 2006, the Town of Sidney has wrapped 39 utility boxes and pump stations to enhance the look of the community’s streets and public spaces.
The program seeks to promote and celebrate established and emerging artists from the Saanich Peninsula and has featured local Coast Salish artists as well as other artists from the region.
New art coming in 2026
In 2025, the Town of Sidney invited artists to submit artwork to be considered for five utility boxes in the community. A total of 29 artists submitted 96 images. Below are the pieces that were selected. The utility boxes will be wrapped in the spring and summer of 2026.
Thank you to everyone who shared their work!
'Humpack Whale' by Ronya Lake
Artist Statement:
On seafaring adventures with my family, I’m forever scanning the horizon for whales—though often it’s just a kayaker or a very persuasive piece of driftwood. Over the years we’ve been lucky to see orcas, gray whales and white-sided dolphins. Last summer, near Wallace Island, a humpback whale surfaced for a breath right in front of us. ‘Humpback Whale’ celebrates that moment and honors the Salish Sea itself—a place alive with wonder that shaped my childhood and now holds the memories that I share with my daughter.

'Sea Grass' by Mary FitzZaland
Artist Statement:
What I love about Sidney is how involved we are with nature, and how diverse our environment is. From the beautiful gardens and landscapes of our town to the views of distant mountains, to the unpredictable weather, and the dynamic interaction of sea and shore. I am inspired by the energy and motion of nature. Sea Grass is an essential element of our environment. It provides a home for the fish and crustaceans that feed us, it helps to oxygenate and filter the water to keep it healthy, even when it washes up onto the shore, it becomes food and fertilizer, and entertainment for children. What I love most about sea grass is the movement and color.

'Le Jardin Extraordinaire' by Françoise Dunstan
Artist Statement:
Sidney always has beautiful and colourful flower displays in its public spaces that enhance the town. Its neighbourhoods have also many small and interesting private gardens which are real gems. As a artist of flowers and gardens, I strongly value colour in all my paintings and like to integrate our backyard birds which add so much joy to our daily lives.

'Constellation Orcas' by Jenna Falk
Artist Statement:
Jenna Falk is an artist based on Galiano Island, BC. She paints with acrylics, watercolour and digital mediums. Her art is inspired by a love of nature, the joy of creating things by hand, and the little things in life that bring us joy. The art shared on the Sidney utility box is called “Constellation Orcas” and is meant to bring out some of the deep magic so many of us see held in these beautiful whales.
