Community invited to provide input on proposed borrowing for new recreation facility in Central Saanich
Sidney, BC – Sidney Council would like to hear from community members before deciding whether to authorize a Capital Regional District loan for the Peninsula Recreation Commission of up to $14.2 million to help fund a new indoor recreation facility in Central Saanich.
The Peninsula Recreation Commission is a subregional service providing recreational facilities and programming to residents of North Saanich, Sidney, and Central Saanich. The service is funded by all three municipalities. For example, all three municipalities contribute financially to Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich, Greenglade Community Centre in Sidney, and the Multi Sport Box in Central Saanich.
Borrowing costs would be shared among all three municipalities, and as such, all three municipalities must approve the borrowing.
The new facility would help address the identified need for additional indoor recreation space in Central Saanich, while also easing growing pressure on existing facilities such as the weight room at Panorama Recreation Centre.
The proposed 10,000-square-foot community recreation facility would provide services such as:
- Weight room
- Fitness/dance studio
- Pottery/ceramics studio
- Multi-purpose space (programs, meeting space, community gathering space).
The facility would be located across from Centennial Park in Saanichton.
Comments will be accepted until 4:00 pm on May 11, 2026, and will be considered at the Regular Council meeting later that day.
