Council considers Progress Report for Year Two of Housing Target Order

Council received an update on Sidney’s progress toward the Province’s Housing Target Order, which requires the Town to achieve 468 net new housing units by June 30, 2029, including a cumulative target of 181 units by the end of Year 2. Sidney successfully met its Year 1 target, achieving a net increase of 90 housing units. With a net total of nine completed housing units during the second annual reporting period, the Town has achieved a cumulative total of 99 net new units to date.

The Town remains well-positioned to meet its five-year housing target. Over the past two years, Council has approved a substantial number of housing units that are expected to be built in the coming years, including major developments at:

  • 2180 Beacon Avenue West (140 housing units)
  • 9522 Lochside Drive (97 housing units)
  • 2060 White Birch Road (60 housing units)
  • 2114 & 2098 Beacon Avenue West and 2107 Jahn Place (180 housing units)
  • 9895/9899 Seventh Street (21 housing units).

Quote:

“I am confident Sidney will achieve and exceed the Province’s five-year housing target,” said Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith. “Over the past two years, Council has approved more than 500 housing units that are expected to be built in the coming years. Development permit applications for another 118 units are currently under review. The Town’s role is to set the table for development in our community over the long-term, and we have done so with recent comprehensive updates to the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw. The pace at which new homes are built is ultimately determined by developers and market conditions.”

Council invites public input on revised recreation facility proposal

Council is seeking community feedback before deciding whether to support a new Capital Regional District borrowing bylaw of up to $9.114 million for a proposed regional recreation facility in Central Saanich. The facility would provide fitness, arts, and multipurpose program space and help address growing demand at Peninsula Recreation facilities, including Greenglade Community Centre and Panorama Recreation Centre, which are jointly funded by Central Saanich, North Saanich, and Sidney.

The proposal has been revised since it was considered earlier this year. The project has been reduced in size and cost, with the proposed borrowing amount decreasing from $14.2 million to $9.114 million. Sidney would contribute approximately 29.3% of the annual debt servicing costs through the Peninsula Recreation Commission.

Comments can be submitted to the Town by 4:00 pm on September 14 by emailing admin@sidney.ca.
