Council reviews report on flood risk mapping and considers a flood adaptation plan
Council has received the results of the Town’s Enhanced Flood Inundation Modelling and Mapping project, which looks at flood risks along Sidney’s shoreline, including the long-term impacts of sea level rise. The project, launched in 2023 and supported by a Union of BC Municipalities grant, builds on earlier regional studies to better understand local hazards from storms, waves, tsunamis, and rising sea levels.
New wind and wave data were collected using offshore monitoring buoys, and advanced modelling was used to assess the 8.5-kilometre shoreline. The results show that flood risk varies by location. The report provides recommended Flood Construction Levels for 29 shoreline sections, some of which are higher than Town’s current Interim Flood Construction Level Policy.
Council has asked staff to report back on the potential establishment of a Flood Construction Level Bylaw. As part of the 2026 Budget, Council will also consider whether to move forward with the development of a Coastal Flood Hazard Mitigation and Adaptation Plan, which could be funded in part through grants.
