Council to consider small dog park at Iroquois Park or Tulista Park

Council considered public feedback on a proposal to create a small off-leash dog park in Iroquois Park, which was collected throughout the month of September. The Town received 59 letters from the public: 32 in support of the proposal, 22 opposed, and 5 neutral.

Given some concerns raised by the community about the suitability of Iroquois Park, Council asked staff to return with a similar concept for a small dog park at Tulista Park (to be located south of the skateboard park) to compare these two possible locations.

The Town will continue to seek feedback on this topic by email at engineeringservices@sidney.ca.The item will be brought back to Council for further consideration in late January. Maps showing the two proposed locations are available at Sidney.ca.

Sidney’s Parks Master Plan, which was completed in 2018, identified a dog park on the east side of Sidney as a key priority.

Town renews five-year maintenance agreement for shared facilities in SHOAL Centre

Council approved a revised five-year Maintenance and Repair Agreement with the SHOAL Centre strata for the upkeep of shared facilities. The Town has been party to similar agreements since the Centre opened in 2005, contributing 19.5% toward common area maintenance costs such as landscaping, parking, and structural elements.

The SHOAL Centre, located on Resthaven Drive across from the library, was created through a public-private partnership. The private side of the centre is home to 54 independent-living units and 25 assisted living units for seniors. The rest of the building is Town-owned, operating under a service contract with Beacon Community Services, which offers a range of services and programs to people 55 and older with a focus on empowering people to age safely in place.
